Making electricity from coal uses water – a lot of it. So we decided to break down the numbers and see how much water does a plant use and where exactly does a desert get water from.

As coal mining operations began, the underground wells, once a lifeline for these communities, turned toxic. Locals allege that water from the mines is being dumped into reservoirs near their villages, polluting their only source of sustenance.
Despite their pleas, the government has turned a blind eye, leaving these communities to fend for themselves in a desert where water is already a scarce commodity.
